4 Portable Chargers I've Tested and Keep Packing on Long Travel Days

From pocket-sized backups to high-capacity power banks, these portable chargers make it easier to stay connected.

Travel days have a way of draining your phone at the worst possible moment.

Usually, it's somewhere between a delayed flight notification, an airport gate change, and trying to pull up a hotel reservation with 8% battery left.

I’ve learned the hard way that a reliable portable charger is one of the most important things in my carry-on, especially during long travel days when outlets are limited.

This is especially important when you’re constantly relying on your devices for boarding passes, navigation, photos and communication.

Just know that the best portable chargers aren’t necessarily the biggest ones. As a mom who oversees several devices, I look for options that are compact enough to toss into a personal item, powerful enough to fully recharge multiple phones in one charge, and easy to use on the go.

From lightweight everyday backups to high-capacity power banks built for long-haul flights, these are the portable chargers worth packing for your next trip.

1. Iniu Portable Mini Power Bank

The Iniu Power Bank strikes a nice balance between portability and power, making it a solid everyday travel companion.

The charger comes in two sizes, though I’m partial to the mini for convenience sake.

It’s slim enough to slide easily into a crossbody bag or jacket pocket, but still provides enough battery life to keep a phone charged through a full day of airport delays, layovers, or sightseeing. It’s also nice to have both USB-A and USB-C type charging options.

The big win here for me is that it can also charge my MacBook. For travelers who want something dependable without carrying a brick-sized battery pack, this is a practical option. If you are only charging phones, you can get up to three complete boosts.

The potential downside: if you are focused more on a complete laptop charge, you won’t have much battery life left (or any) for a phone charge.

2. Mini Portable Charger 5,000mAh

Not every travel day calls for a large power bank, which is why I pack this 5,000mAh Swyop Mini Portable charger in addition to one of the others on this list.

The simplicity and size of this charger allows me to slide it into my pocket or throw it into even the smallest purse, which is especially handy during city days when I don’t want to carry much.

I’ve found smaller chargers like this are ideal for quick boosts throughout the day rather than multiple full recharges.

More specifically, it’s helpful if I’m spending hours on a tour, taking photos, or using any sort of navigation and don’t have the option of constantly hunting for outlets.

I also appreciate that this lightweight charger comes with a little cover to protect the exposed port.

To top it off, the purchase comes with two chargers. The potential downside to note is that it’s only for USB-C type devices.

3. Anker 633 Magnetic Battery

The Anker 633 Magnetic Battery is a favorite because it doesn’t interrupt your browsing.

The magnetic attachment snaps securely onto compatible iPhones, which means, not only can I continue using my phone while it charges, but the included foldable stand is useful for watching a movie in-flight or hopping on a quick Zoom call during a layover.

The 10,000mAh battery also provides enough power for extended travel days without feeling overly bulky in a carry-on. It takes just over two hours to fully charge a phone from the red when not using it simultaneously.

I’ve found magnetic chargers like this are especially convenient when I want to avoid tangled cords or constantly digging through my bag for charging cables.

However, if you have a bulky case, you’ll have to remove the device from its case in order for the charger to work.

4. Limitless Innovations Ultimate Pro Portable Power Bank

For long-haul travel days or trips where I’m constantly using my phone for navigation, photos, and hotspotting, a higher-capacity charger like the Limitless Innovations Ultimate Pro 15,000mAh Portable Power Bank is worth the extra space in my bag.

The larger battery capacity means I can recharge multiple devices before needing to recharge the power bank itself, which is especially helpful with a packed itinerary or traveling abroad where outlets aren’t guaranteed.

Despite its higher power capacity, it still feels relatively streamlined compared to bulkier portable chargers I’ve carried in the past.

I also appreciate not having to carry extra cords. And since not everyone in my family has the same generation of iPhone, it’s convenient to have one bank to power different devices.

A built-in flashlight offers assistance when searching into the depths of a carry-on, though it’s admittedly slower to charge than the rest. If you need a big boost, you may want to plug in early, but it’s still a useful item that’s well worth the cost.

The Shortcut

  • The best portable chargers balance battery life, portability, and fast charging without adding bulk to your bag.

  • Built-in cables and wall plugs can make a huge difference during hectic travel days.

  • Compact chargers are ideal for daily exploring, while higher-capacity models work best for flights and multi-device charging.
