6 Things My Beach Bag Never Leaves Home Without

Lightweight, functional, and aesthetic to boot.
Updated July 5, 2026

There’s a difference between packing for the beach and packing well for the beach.

After years of summer road trips, lake days in my home base of Maine, and farther-flung travels to the sand, I’ve learned that a well-packed beach bag can help keep stress to a minimum.

The best beach essentials aren’t necessarily the trendiest ones, but rather, are the items that make the day easier, more comfortable, and far less chaotic once you’re actually there. I’ve also realized that less is usually more.

Instead of stuffing my bag with “just in case” items, I now stick to a handful of products that have consistently earned their spot. These are the beach essentials I actually reach for every summer and make sure to have when traveling.

I’ve learned that the best beach bag is one that looks polished but can still handle a little chaos, and the Mark & Graham Waterproof Caning Wide Tote does exactly that.

The woven caning-inspired texture gives it an elevated, vacation-ready look, while the waterproof material makes it surprisingly practical for beach days, pool afternoons, and hopping on the boat.

I especially like that it feels structured enough to stay upright while packing sunscreen, towels, books, and water bottles, instead of collapsing into a pile halfway through the day. The wide silhouette also makes it easy to find what I need quickly, which is especially helpful when I’m digging around for sunglasses or SPF with sandy hands.

It strikes the right balance between style and functionality, which is what I look for in any beach tote.

A Sand-Resistant Towel That Actually Stays Put

I’ve tested plenty of beach towels over the years, and many of them end up damp, heavy, or completely covered in sand halfway through the day.

The Sand Cloud Diamond Turtle Towel, however, is a rare outlier that solves several of those problems at once. It’s lightweight and compact enough to fit easily into even a small beach bag, but still large enough to spread out comfortably on the sand. The material is also designed specifically to repel sand, so you'll bring less home.

One detail I especially like is the hidden zip pocket, which gives me a secure place to stash my phone, keys, or card holder while I’m swimming or walking along the shoreline. It also dries much faster than traditional cotton towels, which makes packing up at the end of the day a bit more efficient.

A Compact Cooler for Drinks and Snacks

First, let me say: This cooler is the best $5 I’ve ever spent.

The Sun Squad Soft-Sided Personal Cooler is compact and surprisingly functional, holding the equivalent of four 12-ounce cans or a combination of a drink and small snacks.

It fits right in my beach bag and is perfect for shorter beach days, and I also like that the soft-sided shape has a bit of stretch, allowing me to add in a flat ice pack to extend the chill for as long as possible.

Beyond beach trips, this mighty bargain of a cooler has seen many road trips and days at the lake, and I’ll never lug one of those bulky hard-sided ones again.

A Back-up Bucket Hat

I rarely head to the beach without a hat anymore, especially during peak summer afternoons when the sun feels relentless.

But someone in my family is always forgetting one, so I pack an extra. Because I am a minimalist beach packer, I look for something that folds flat, such as the Solbari Bondi Bucket Hat. What I appreciate most is that it feels lightweight and breathable instead of stiff or overly structured, and it also offers UPF 50+ protection.

Some sun hats look great but become uncomfortable after an hour outside; this one is designed for extended wear and can withstand being submerged in the water (something that happens often).

The wider brim also helps protect areas that are easy to miss with sunscreen, like the scalp, ears, and sides of the face.

Sunscreen That Doesn’t Feel Like It

Of course sunscreen is a staple at the beach, but as a 40-something, my face needs something different than the rest of my body.

Many formulas feel too greasy or heavy on humid beach days, but Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen SPF 50 is one of the few I consistently repurchase because it feels weightless on the skin.

The invisible finish makes reapplying throughout the day much easier, which is ultimately what matters most with sunscreen.

I also like that it doesn’t leave my hands sticky or transfer easily onto sunglasses and clothing. When I’m packing light for the beach, this is always one of the first things that goes into my bag.

A Small Pouch to Keep Chaos Contained

One of the easiest ways I’ve streamlined my beach bag is by using a separate pouch for smaller essentials that would otherwise disappear into the bottom of my tote.

The Strawflower Faye Heritage Small Quilted Block Print Cosmetic Pouch is the right size for storing my phone, lip balm, sunscreen sticks, hair ties, earbuds, or jewelry while keeping everything easy to find in one place. It’s especially helpful in separating items I don’t want coated in sand.

The quilted cotton construction gives it a soft, lightweight feel, while the hand-printed block patterns make it feel more polished than a standard cosmetic case.

It’s one of those small organizational pieces that makes a surprisingly big difference during beach days, especially when I’m constantly digging through a larger tote for the essentials.

The Shortcut

  • The Sand Cloud towel has a hidden zip pocket for your phone or keys, which comes in handy when taking a dip in the ocean.

  • Skip the bulky hard-sided cooler: the Sun Squad soft-sided one holds four cans and still has room for a flat ice pack.

  • A separate small pouch keeps sand-prone items like sunscreen and hair ties from disappearing into the bottom of your tote.
