Set along some of Southern California’s best beaches, Carlsbad is a laidback town with a mild year-round climate that feels straight out of a Beach Boys song.
Located in northern San Diego County, you’ll find easy-breezy vibes, miles of soft sand, and a walkable village that draws vacationers like bees to honey.
Many visitors head directly to the beach. However, Carlsbad also offers a range of activities on dry land, from a vibrant culinary scene to one-of-a-kind shops.
If you’re traveling with kids, consider a visit to nearby Legoland. A year-long slate of events also make it a worthy visit throughout the year, including a colorful carpet of ranunculus blooms at The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch each spring, and an annual holiday tree lighting event that looks plucked from a Hallmark Christmas movie.
I previously lived in Los Angeles for years, and during that time, I preferred to visit Carlsbad during the quieter winter months. The off-season presents a rare opportunity to savor uncrowded beaches, a vibrant downtown, and sunny weather that feels warm and summery no matter what the calendar shows. Come see why there’s never a wrong time for Carlsbad.

Spread Out on Carlsbad’s White Sand Beaches

Swimmers, surfers, and sunset watchers share Carlsbad’s seven-mile stretch of pristine Pacific sand and surf.
There are five beaches spread across that stretch of sand, and each one enjoys a distinct flavor, with beauty being the unifying factor. South Carlsbad State Beach has a blufftop campground; while Carlsbad State Beach, aka Tamarack State Beach, is a magnet for families thanks to amenities like public restrooms and lifeguards. North Carlsbad Beach, meanwhile, offers room to roam and tends to be quieter as there are no lifeguards or restrooms.
For a blue-chip experience, Beach Genie will deliver chairs, sun umbrellas, coolers, and additional gear directly to the beach of your choice.
While the ocean may be too chilly for swimming outside of summer, light winter crowds, loads of parking, and SoCal sunshine make the off-season still especially appealing.
Shop Local for Souvenirs—or Make Your Own

You’d expect an abundance of surf shops in a beach town and Carlsbad doesn’t disappoint. There are many local favorites, including Witt’s Carlsbad Pipelines and Offshore Surf Shop.
What’s perhaps more surprising to discover is the array of independently-owned shops clustered in the village that go far beyond swim trunks and wetsuits. My favorites are Spin Records, which stocks an eclectic collection of vinyl, as well as the Village Rock Shop, where you can load up on crystals and colorful gemstones.
If you’ve hopped on the hobby-cation trend, there are numerous hands-on craft experiences to try in Carlsbad, which all remind me of being a kid at summer camp. Learn to dip and decorate a candle at Candle Bar, build a terrarium at Rebel Villa, create a mug or vase at Handled Pottery Studio, or make a solid glass paperweight at Barrio Glassworks.
Walk This Way

Exploring Carlsbad on your own two feet is easy, defying the stereotype of California’s car-crazed culture. The compact village is a pedestrian’s dream, with an eye-catching array of murals and street art to provide dynamic visuals. And with year-round temps routinely in the 60s or 70s, and little annual rainfall, you’re nearly guaranteed to have the right weather to go along with it.
For an overview of the local food scene, book a walking tour with Carlsbad Food Tours. Your guide will enlighten you on the town’s history as you sample delectable noshes, all while upping your step count.
For more of a DIY approach, the Carlsbad Seawall is a 1.4-mile paved path that hugs the coastline and hosts walkers, runners, cyclists, and rollerbladers, with Instagram-worthy views. In the off season, it’s also far less congested than in summer.
Nature lovers should head to the Batiquitos Lagoon Hiking Trail; I’ve spotted endangered birds such as the snowy plover. Winter, in particular, is a great time to visit, as a variety of birds have journeyed south in search of warmer temperatures. Bring binoculars to enhance the experience.
Delectable Dining

After a day at the beach or strolling through town, Carlsbad offers a wealth of options to eat well.
Even when visiting in the middle of winter, a stop into one of several ice cream shops will make it feel as if it’s July 4th. Numerous shops serve creamy scoops, including Handel’s, Crispy Cones, and Stella Jean’s. The Hawaiian-style shave ice at Aloha Ice is a refreshing alternative.
If your taste buds lean sweet, The Goods fries fresh donuts all day and is a favorite with the local surf community. There’s also Wildland, which was once a boogie board factory, and has since been transformed into a post-industrial dining hotspot with a bakery that sells luscious pastries and some of the best sourdough bread I’ve ever tasted.
For something savory, head to the aptly-named Campfire serving an imaginative menu of wood-fired veggies, fish, and meat that entices foodies from across Southern California. Leave room for s’mores, the must-order dessert that completes the experience.
Sleep Near the Ocean

For my money, proximity to the beach is the ultimate luxury in Carlsbad, even if it’s too cold to swim. Beach Terrace Inn is a boutique hotel so close to the water, the sound of the waves will be your lullaby.
Walk down a few steps and the beach valet will set you up in a comfy yellow beach chair under a striped umbrella on the sand year-round. If you prefer, relax poolside in a chaise lounge next to a fire pit.
The inn prides itself on offering guests a customizable experience, from a pillow menu to surf ponchos instead of standard bathrobes. A complimentary breakfast buffet, with creative treats like fresh berries served in a wafer cone, is a playful way to start your day, at any time of the year.
